2021 Schedule

The Ann Arbor Spring Training Series is on the schedule for 2021! We're starting with the goal to have a similar program to past years with a Beginning Racer Program that introduces new racers to safe and effective pack riding, plus a number of categories to practice new skills or simply get out and race. The details are not finalized, but do have some dates. As we are able to confirm more details for the series we will share more about the schedule, location, etc.

Sundays: June 20, June 27, July 11, July 18, and July 25, 2021.

We wrapped up the Beginning Racer Webinars yesterday, and in case you missed either session, they are both available online. Beginning Racer Webinar, Session 1

If you missed the first session of the Beginning Racer Webinar or you're new to riding in a group and want to learn the basics, check it out below (or here). We covered the basic skills and concepts of riding in a group.

We'll build on these next week in the second session by talking about how these basics are applied to cornering, sprinting, and navigating your way through a group of riders. If you'd like to join us live on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 8:30 to listen or ask questions, sign up here (free!) any time before that session starts.

We're Back … Virtually!

While the Ann Arbor Spring Training Series is on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bike riding has been on anything but a hiatus—people are out enjoying riding! At some point outdoor racing will return and we want to help new racers—or even just people interested in riding in groups—be prepared. So we're hosting two sessions of the Beginning Racer Webinar, June 20 and 27, 8:30-9:30 a.m.

In this free webinar, learn the basics for riding in a group. You could be headed out with friends, joining a group ride, finishing a gran fondo, doing a gravel grinder, or racing in a criterium—understanding how you should ride and what to expect of others in a group will help you to ride faster and more safely!

This program will be done in two sessions. On Saturday, June 20 we will cover the fundamentals of what, why, and how to ride well in a group. The following Saturday, June 27, we will build on those fundamentals by applying and adapting them to cornering, sprinting, and other dynamic group riding situations. Along the way we will have plenty of time for question and answer about group riding or cycling in general.

Please join us for both sessions, but if you can't participate live make sure to register and we will notify you when the recorded versions are available.

Normally we'd learn and practice these basics during the Ann Arbor Spring Training Series, but until the series returns live we're excited to help you learn the foundations of basic group riding skills.

Original 2020 dates cancelled, planning for future

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the related suspension of USA Cycling event permits through May 31, 2020, none of the originally scheduled Ann Arbor Spring Training Series dates will take place. We are currently looking at the calendar for the remainder of 2020, considering different dates, and different formats. Additionally, we are assessing how best to work within the overall competitive race schedule and our volunteer hours in light of the many current and future changes and challenges in cycling and far beyond. If we choose to put on another version of the Spring Training Series at some point this year, we will announce it here and across our social media channels. Regardless, we are committed to continuing our annual multi-week series including the clinic to help orient new racers to road racing skills.

COVID-19 plans for STS

The first race of the AAVC Spring Training Series is scheduled for April 5, 2020. We are aware of the current concerns regarding the spread of COVID-19 and we are monitoring the situation to determine whether we will cancel the clinic and races on April 5th. The event will continue as planned unless large gatherings and sporting events continue to be discouraged. We will notify the racing community on our website,, by March 26, 2020 if a cancellation will occur. If the event on April 5th is cancelled we will refund all pre-registration fees for that date. We will make decisions regarding the other weekends in the series at a later date.
